Furnace Village
The village of Furnace in Argyll lies on the shores of Loch Fyne some 8 miles south of Inveraray on the Lochgilphead road. The village takes it’s name from the Old Craleckan Iron Furnace which used to produce charcoal in Victorian times.
Today the village economy is much more diverse and includes tourism, forestry, fish and small scale quarrying. Furnace boasts a good local pub, The Furnace Inn and a village store/post office.
Locally the community is well served by a GP surgery, primary school and village hall. There is also a childrens play area and a grass football park overlooking Loch Fyne.
Furnace is an ideal location for enjoying a holiday in Argyll & Bute. It is a quiet place with enough facilities (pub, shop, children’s play area and shore line walks) but it is also within easy reach of many interesting areas and activities.
To celebrate the millennium, funds were raised to open the Leacainn Walk, a circular route of approximately 10 miles which starts and finishes in the village. The walk follows the route of the river whilst taking in significant landmarks and buildings associated with the village’s industrial and social heritage.
Additionally from the village a track heads back along Loch Fyne to Inveraray. This route is ideal for walking or cycling.
