Kilchurn Castle, Loch Awe enjoys a wonderful setting at the east end of Loch Awe. The original castle was first built by Sir Colin Campbell around 1420. The castle was then extended in the 16th century by Sir Duncan Campbell Further improvements were made but by the end of the 16th century the castle was in the hands of the MacGregors. During Jacobean times when Bonnie Prince Charlie was fighting the English, Kilchurn Castle was a government stronghold. Kilchurn Castle only really began to fall into disrepair in the 18th century.
Originally the ground on which Kilchurn Castle stood was a small island but with changes in the water levels of Loch Awe the castle is now no longer on an island and is easily reached on foot.
Kilchurn Castle is now looked after by Historic Scotland. If you wish to visit the castle site, park your car near the bridge over the River Orchy on the main Oban Road or in one of a few lay byes on the Inveraray road.
Do not attempt to scale the castle walls. Kilchurn Castle is a site of historical importance and should be looked after. In any event as a ruin there is always a small chance of falling masonary.
